The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike commended the people of Rivers State for their compliance during the lockdown declared by the State Government in order to check the spread of Covid-19.

In an interview, on Thursday, Wike said he was happy over the high level of compliance and support shown by the people and that he was satisfied and the percentage was up to 95.

In the other hand the Governor was not happy, he said it was unfortunate that the Deputy Commissioner of Police tried to issue out illegal letters to companies to operate in order to get money from them.

Wike said the Deputy Commissioner had no right to issue out such approvals while the state was on lock down that he had never seen such action in his life. He also went further to say those who violated the lockdown will be prosecuted at the mobile court for the interest of the state and all the impounded vehicles must be auctioned.

Over 200 persons have been arrested and over 20 vehicles impounded by different teams enforcing the lockdown.

The Governor assured the people the lockdown will be lifted once the level of compliance is reasonable, for it is about protecting people's lives.

He said the State Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on the illegal activities made by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, by 3pm today.

The Governor also arrested some very important persons (VIPS), who were not on essential duties, but rather moving around with their escorts. He allowed a pregnant woman who violated the lockdown order, on compassionate grounds.
