COVID-19: 30 inmates have finally regained freedom in Cross River State.

Updated 05/07/2020

The Chief Judge of Cross River, Justice Maurice Eneji, has released 30 inmates from the state’s Correctional Service Centre in Afokang, in order to decongest the correctional centers and also to reduce the spread Covid-19 pandemic in Calabar. The directive came from the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, and Gov. Ben Ayade.

The thirty inmates released were set free due to their poor health conditions, minor offences like theft, trespass, mischief and also those who had spent years beyond their prescribed jail terms.

This action made the Acting Chief Justice to commend the Director of Public Prosecution, Non Governmental Organisations, National Human Rights Commission and Learned Counsel, for the exercise and their effort.
